Last weekend I was introduced to an amazing new SUPERfood – Moringa! (It’s fun to say too)
What is Moringa?
Moringa is a plant native to parts of Africa and Asia. The most common species of Moringa is Moringa Oleifera, a tree native to the foothills of the Himalayas. Much of the tree is edible and the leaves are crazy high in available protein, vitamins and minerals. For centuries, Ghanaian medicine men have incorporated Moringa leaves into their herbal and medicinal formulas for the leaves energizing and healing effects.
What are the benefits of Moringa?
Moringa is known as the “miracle tree” because it is one of the most nutrient rich plants on the earth. It contains 90+ nutrients, 46 antioxidants, and all essential amino acids. It is a great source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron and has easily digestible protein. This superfood is said to:
- boost immunity
- provide sustained energy
- promote muscle relaxation
- lower blood pressure
- improve move
- promote better sleep
- improve digestion
Gram for gram, Moringa leaves are said to contain:
- 4x the calcium of milk
- 3x the potassium of bananas
- 2x the protein of yogurt
- 4x the Vitamin A of carrots
- 7x the Vitamin C of oranges
- 25x the iron of spinach

As you can see it’s a pretty amazing plant. There are quite a few supplements available. I went to my local Choices in Yaletown and picked up a bag of MoringaWise organic raw moringa oleifera leaf powder for $24.99. They recommend 2 tsp of the powder per day so It should last me about 5 weeks, pretty good bang for buck. Matt also got on the Moringa band wagon and ordered a starter kit from Zija. The company didn’t really jive with me but to each their own. I’ve been using the supplement in my morning smoothie for a week now and already notice that I have more energy. I like the flavour too, it tastes like green tea. I’ve been using the recipe below:
Morning Moringa Anti-Oxidant Smoothie:
- 1 medium banana
- 1/2 cup of organic blueberries (frozen)
- 2 tsp of MoringaWise moringa powder
- 1 tsp of chia seed
- 1 tbsp of cacao chunks
- 1 tsp of hemp hearts
Blend all ingredients together on high until well mixed, serve and enjoy.
